In modern ventilation systems, air flow controllers play a key role in maintaining the required microclimate parameters and energy efficiency. The two most common air exchange systems are Constant Air Volume (CAV) and Variable Air Volume (VAV).
CAV systems
Maintain a stable, preset air flow rate regardless of the current needs of the premises. These systems are simple to design and operate and are suitable for facilities with uniform loads that do not require flexible air flow control. However, CAV systems are less energy efficient because the fan operates at a constant capacity, and excess air is either redistributed or removed.
VAV systems
Allow dynamic adjustment of the air flow rate based on the actual needs of each zone. Control is achieved using electric actuators on the air dampers, pressure sensors, temperature sensors, and sensors detecting the presence or concentration of CO₂. The ventilation unit automatically adjusts fan performance, maintaining a constant pressure in the distribution chamber. This provides significant energy savings, especially in buildings with complex layouts.
Advantages of VAV systems:
– Reduced energy consumption by reducing the volume of air supplied to unoccupied or underutilized areas.
– Individual microclimate control for each room.
– Flexible automation: integration with occupancy, temperature, humidity, and CO₂ sensors.
– Maintaining stable pressure and compensating for changes in filter and duct resistance.
For proper operation of VAV systems, it is important to correctly configure the air duct network: each controlled valve must serve a separate zone, and the pressure must be measured at the point after branching.
